The angular bears and the smoothness glides

Assistant Kirkegaard (Cemetery) 1983-84

The 1980s … I’m about to move to an apartment ready for renovation in Frederik VII’s Gade. Travelling home on the bus. Noticed something on the cemetery wall. Something that is either in the process of forming or disintegrating. It appears to be crawling over the wall … trying to escape from the cemetery … or maybe from the clamour of the city. Will it succeed or will it remain? Can it maintain its integrity? The thought of it haunts me, not exactly menacing yet not quite comforting … maybe just a pure thought-provoking granite form – there in the dark one evening on Nørrebrogade. I cannot, nor will I ever, forget this first encounter – I always look for it when I pass that way.
